Samuel Davis Sturgis (1822-1889) was a career United States Army officer who served with distinction in the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, and the Indian Wars. A graduate of West Point, Sturgis was commissioned into the cavalry and gained valuable combat experience before the outbreak of the Civil War. During the conflict he commanded Union cavalry and infantry forces in several major campaigns, including service at Bull Run, Shiloh, and Brice’s Crossroads. Following the war, Sturgis continued his military career on the western frontier, where he played a significant role in campaigns against Native American tribes. His long military service spanned nearly four decades and encompassed many of the most important conflicts of nineteenth-century America.
