Army.” A desirable example from one of the Confederacy’s senior field commanders, with Stewart identifying himself by his wartime rank.

Alexander Peter Stewart (1821–1908) was one of the Confederate Army’s most respected corps commanders during the American Civil War. A graduate of West Point, he resigned from the U.S. Army in 1861 to join the Confederacy and rose steadily through the ranks, serving with distinction at the Battles of Shiloh, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta Campaign, Franklin, and Nashville. Following the death of General John Bell Hood’s senior commanders, Stewart assumed command of the Army of Tennessee’s last remaining corps, serving until the Confederacy’s surrender in 1865. After the war, he became Chancellor of the University of Mississippi and later served as Commissioner of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, helping preserve the history of the conflict in which he had fought.
