David Sloan Stanley (1828-1902) was a career United States Army officer and one of the Union Army’s most capable field commanders. A graduate of West Point, Stanley served on the frontier before the outbreak of the Civil War and went on to distinguish himself in numerous Western Theater campaigns. He fought at Shiloh, Corinth, Stones River, Chickamauga, and throughout the Atlanta Campaign under General William T. Sherman. During the Battle of Franklin in 1864, Stanley displayed exceptional bravery while leading Union forces and was severely wounded in action. For his gallantry at Franklin, he received the Medal of Honor. Following the war, Stanley continued his military career, eventually attaining the rank of brigadier general in the Regular Army and commanding several frontier departments during the postwar era.
