Details:
Henry W. Slocum autographed handwritten letter (ALS), two pages written on both sides of a single folded sheet, dated August 16 (year not stated). Written entirely in Slocum’s hand and signed, “H. W. Slocum,” the letter was penned from his residence at 465 Clinton Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.
In this warm personal letter, Slocum responds to an invitation for the 27th, explaining that he had previously promised to attend a reunion in Portland, Maine, on the 28th and therefore must decline. He notes that, while he would prefer returning to his old home, he feels obligated to honor his prior commitment. Slocum closes on a cordial note, expressing hopes that the recipient will enjoy a pleasant gathering and that they may meet again on a future occasion together with mutual friends and former comrades.
Fine condition. Tipped into a slightly larger backing sheet along the edges only.
Henry Warner Slocum (1827–1894) was a prominent Union general during the Civil War who commanded corps-level formations in the Army of the Potomac and later played a key role in General William T. Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign and March to the Sea. A veteran of Gettysburg, where his XII Corps helped secure the Union right flank, Slocum emerged as one of the war’s most capable senior commanders. Following the conflict, he resumed his legal career and served multiple terms as a U.S. Congressman from New York.
