Details:
Quarter plate ambrotype depicting a young Union Civil War soldier posed in uniform wearing a regulation forage cap and buttoned military frock coat. The unidentified soldier is shown in a formal studio portrait with a patriotic. The image is housed in its original quarter plate thermoplastic-style case with ornate gilt mat, and rich burgundy velvet liner, retaining its original working clasp and hinges.
Very good condition. The ambrotype displays excellent contrast and clarity.
Ambrotypes became one of the most popular photographic processes during the American Civil War, prized for producing highly detailed images at a fraction of the cost of daguerreotypes. Tens of thousands of Union and Confederate soldiers sat for portraits before departing for the front, often sending these treasured likenesses home to family members as lasting keepsakes.
