Theodore Sedgwick autograph manuscript document signed, one page, approximately 7.75 x 12.5", concerning an early Massachusetts land records search. In the document, Sedgwick instructs that a messenger proceed to Springfield, Massachusetts, by way of Great Barrington to examine registry records dating from 1752 to 1775 in search of deeds involving Joseph Dwight, Joseph Hawley, and other parties connected with land west of Sheffield and Stockbridge. He directs that copies of any relevant deeds be obtained and compared by a disinterested witness capable of attesting to their accuracy, concluding with a request that any assistance rendered to "Mr. Eaton" would be appreciated. Boldly signed at the conclusion, "Theo. Sedgwick."

Very good condition with expected age toning, scattered foxing, fold lines, and light edge wear. The upper edge exhibits several small losses and short tears, with minor remnants of old mounting tape visible on the reverse.

Theodore Sedgwick (1746-1813) was a Founding Father, attorney, statesman, and jurist from Massachusetts. A delegate to the Continental Congress, he later served in both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate, becoming Speaker of the House from 1799 to 1801. A close ally of Alexander Hamilton and a leading member of the Federalist Party, Sedgwick played an important role in shaping the early federal government during the nation's formative years.
