Details:
Fred Bock autographed 5 x 5” glossy black-and-white photograph depicting the famous nose art of the B-29 Bockscar, the aircraft that carried out the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. Bock has signed and dated the image in blue ink, “Fred Bock 9 Aug. ’90.” The photograph captures the aircraft’s distinctive nose art featuring a stylized railroad connecting Nagasaki and Salt Lake, a commemorative design applied during the aircraft’s postwar museum years. Signed photographs of Bockscar by its namesake remain highly sought after by collectors of World War II and atomic bomb history.
Fine condition.
Frederick C. “Fred” Bock (1918–2000) was a U.S. Army Air Forces captain and B-29 pilot assigned to the elite 509th Composite Group during World War II. Although the aircraft Bockscar was named after him because it was his regularly assigned bomber, Bock did not pilot the aircraft on the Nagasaki mission. On August 9, 1945, he instead commanded the accompanying instrumentation aircraft, The Great Artiste, while Major Charles W. Sweeney flew Bockscar on the atomic bombing mission over Nagasaki.
