Original Civil War Centennial commemorative folio issued in 1961, containing a matching pair of large-format reproductions titled “Union Commanders” and “Confederate Commanders.” Housed in the original publisher’s folio, the portfolio was produced to commemorate the 1861-1961 Civil War Centennial and contains two 9.5 x 14.5-inch prints reproduced from the celebrated composite photographic portraits originally commissioned by The Travelers Insurance Company in 1884. The prints, manufactured by the Notman Photo Co. of Boston, depict many of the most prominent military leaders of both the Union and Confederate armies in elaborate composite arrangements. The Union print features Abraham Lincoln surrounded by leading Union commanders including Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, Philip Sheridan, George G. Meade, Joseph Hooker, Winfield Scott Hancock, David Farragut, and others. The Confederate print depicts Jefferson Davis alongside Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, James Longstreet, P.G.T. Beauregard, Joseph E. Johnston, J.E.B. Stuart, and additional Confederate military leaders.

The original presentation folio exhibits light age toning, scattered handling wear, and minor soiling consistent with age. Both prints remain clean with subtle toning.

The original 1884 composite portraits commissioned by Travelers Insurance are recognized among the earliest and most ambitious examples of composite photographic printing used in American advertising. Combining dozens of individually photographed historical figures into a single cohesive composition, they represented an innovative achievement in nineteenth-century photographic reproduction. Issued during the Civil War Centennial, this 1961 portfolio faithfully reproduced these iconic images, preserving two of the most recognizable visual tributes to the principal commanders of both sides of the American Civil War.
