Details:
Original Civil War-era printed appeal broadside issued by the National Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Widows and Mothers Association, measuring approximately 8.25 x 10.25". Printed shortly after the Civil War, the broadside appeals to the “Loyal and Humane Citizens of the United States” for support in establishing permanent homes for the destitute widows and mothers of Union soldiers and sailors who died in the service of the nation. The document outlines the Association’s plans to create National Homes and announces a proposed “National Fair” in New York City to raise funds for the effort.
The appeal is signed in print by the Association’s National Executive Committee, headed by Mrs. Lieutenant General William T. Sherman as President, with numerous prominent military, political, and civic leaders listed as vice presidents, committee members, and supporters. Among the distinguished names appearing throughout the broadside are General Robert Anderson, General John C. Frémont, General Robert C. Schenck, General Nathaniel P. Banks, General John A. Logan, Thaddeus Stevens, Schuyler Colfax, Francis P. Blair, Richard Yates, George H. Williams, Horace Greeley, and many other notable figures of the Reconstruction era.
Very good condition.
Following the Civil War, tens of thousands of widows and aging mothers found themselves struggling despite modest government pensions. Charitable organizations such as the National Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Widows and Mothers Association sought to provide long-term care and financial assistance to the families of those who had sacrificed their lives preserving the Union. This broadside represents an important example of early postwar humanitarian efforts and reflects the nation’s attempt to care for the families left behind after America’s deadliest conflict. Rich with the names of prominent Civil War generals, politicians, journalists, and public figures, it serves as both a significant historical document and an exceptional artifact of Reconstruction-era philanthropy.
