Ambrose E. Burnside Civil War-era carte de visite depicting the Union major general standing in full dress uniform with sword at his side. Published by E. Anthony of New York from a Brady’s National Portrait Gallery negative, the mount identifies the subject as “Maj. Gen. Burnside.” This is a classic wartime portrait of one of the most recognizable and frequently photographed Union commanders.
Near fine condition.
Ambrose Everett Burnside (1824-1881) was a Union Army officer whose distinctive facial hair gave rise to the term “sideburns.” A graduate of West Point, Burnside achieved early success along the North Carolina coast before rising to command the Army of the Potomac following General George B. McClellan’s removal in late 1862. He is best remembered for leading Union forces at the Battle of Fredericksburg, one of the war’s most costly Federal defeats. Despite setbacks in the field, Burnside remained a respected and loyal officer, later commanding the Department of the Ohio and participating in the Overland Campaign. After the war he served as Governor of Rhode Island and as a United States Senator. Burnside remains one of the most recognizable figures of the Civil War era and an enduring subject of nineteenth-century photographic portraiture.
