Henry M. Black autographed mounted 4.5 x 6” oval albumen portrait depicting the distinguished Union officer in military uniform. The photograph is attractively mounted on its original finished mount measuring approximately 9.75 x 12.75 inches and bears Black’s inscription in the lower right of the mount, “Col. H. M. Black / Comd’t of Cadets.” The portrait was produced by Warren, Philadelphia, one of the leading photographic studios of the nineteenth century.

Very good condition. The mount exhibits scattered foxing, light toning, minor edge wear, and a few unobtrusive creases consistent with age. 

Henry Martyn Black (1827–1897) was a career United States Army officer whose military service spanned the Civil War and the postwar frontier era. Initially serving with the 6th U.S. Infantry, he distinguished himself during the Civil War and was appointed colonel of the 37th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry (U.S.C.T.), commanding African American troops during the final campaigns of the war. Following the conflict, Black remained in the regular army and served in a variety of important assignments. Among his most notable postwar appointments was his service as Commandant of Cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point, a prestigious position reflected in the inscription on this portrait. He later attained the rank of brigadier general by brevet and concluded a long and respected military career marked by leadership, professionalism, and a significant role in training the next generation of Army officers.
