Confederate-era fractional currency note issued by The State of Alabama, denominated Ten Cents and dated January 1, 1863, Montgomery. Printed in black ink and featuring the Alabama state seal at center, with obligations payable in Confederate States Treasury Notes when presented in sums of twenty dollars and upward. The note bears a handwritten serial number and facsimile signatures of state officials, together with a printed statement noting that it was receivable in payment of public dues.

Issued during the height of the Civil War, this small-denomination note reflects the severe shortage of specie and circulating coinage throughout the Confederacy. As metal coins disappeared from commerce, Southern states and municipalities produced fractional paper currency to facilitate everyday transactions. Alabama was among the states that issued emergency notes in denominations of less than one dollar, allowing commerce to continue despite the widespread hoarding of precious metals and mounting wartime inflation.

The design features an attractive central vignette of the Alabama state seal, prominent denomination panels, and intricate typography characteristic of Confederate and state-issued emergency currency. Notes of this type circulated extensively throughout Alabama and the broader Confederacy, serving as a practical substitute for coinage during the final years of the war.

Alabama seceded from the Union on January 11, 1861, and became one of the founding states of the Confederate States of America. During the war, Montgomery briefly served as the first Confederate capital before the government relocated to Richmond, Virginia.
