Charles Stewart (1778-1869) was one of the most distinguished officers in early United States naval history. Best remembered as captain of the frigate USS Constitution, he earned the nickname “Old Ironsides’ Lucky Captain” after capturing the British warships HMS Cyane and HMS Levant in one of the final and most celebrated victories of the War of 1812. Stewart remained in naval service for more than six decades, ultimately attaining the rank of senior commodore and helping shape the early professional United States Navy. His career spanned from the Quasi-War with France through the Civil War era, making him one of the longest-serving naval officers in American history.
