Niles’ Weekly Register (Baltimore), Vol. XL, Whole No. 1,033, July 9, 1831. Complete 16-page issue featuring front-page coverage of the death of fifth U.S. President James Monroe, who died on July 4, 1831, at the age of 73. Published just days after his passing, the issue opens with an obituary noting that Monroe “died at New York on Monday last, the fourth of July,” and reflects upon his service to the nation, adding that a more extensive remembrance would follow in the succeeding issue.

Very good condition, complete as issued with 16 pages, displaying expected age toning, light handling wear, and minor edge wear consistent with an early 19th-century newspaper.

James Monroe (1758–1831) served as the fifth President of the United States from 1817 to 1825 and was the last president of the Founding Father generation. His presidency, often referred to as the “Era of Good Feelings,” was marked by national expansion, the acquisition of Florida, the Missouri Compromise, and the issuance of the Monroe Doctrine, one of the defining principles of American foreign policy. Monroe remains one of only three presidents to die on Independence Day, passing away on July 4, 1831, exactly fifty-five years after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
