William McKinley (1843–1901) served as the 25th President of the United States from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. A Civil War veteran, congressman, governor of Ohio, and champion of protective tariffs, McKinley presided over a period of rapid economic expansion and guided the nation through the Spanish-American War, which established the United States as an emerging global power with overseas territories including Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. After being shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, McKinley died on September 14, 1901, becoming the third U.S. president to be assassinated. His death prompted an outpouring of national mourning, during which numerous memorial objects—including photograph albums such as these—were produced to commemorate his life and presidency.
