The Daily Mercury, April 16, 1865. Front page "Extra" edition reporting the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln under the dramatic headline "The Great National Calamity." Published just two days after the assassination, the issue contains extensive early coverage of the unfolding events, including reports on the "Reported Arrest of Booth," "Seizure of Booth's Trunk at his Hotel," "The Scope of the Plot," "How the Secretary [Seward] Saved Himself," and "The Nation's Grief." Additional reports detail official orders from the Army of the James, the condition of Secretary William H. Seward and his son, public mourning in New York, and the continuing nationwide response to the assassination. One page, measuring approximately 12 x 18 inches.

Expected age toning and handling wear. The newspaper has been mounted to a backing board with the edges wrapped around and secured on the verso with period tape, resulting in tape staining visible on the reverse. Two of the wrapped edge sections have become detached from the backing and are loose but included. Additional edge tears, wrinkling, and scattered wear are present, consistent with age and prior display.
