Original 8.5 x 12.75” United Press International (UPI) teleprinter bulletin issued on November 25, 1963, providing a detailed, near-contemporaneous account of the state funeral of President John F. Kennedy at Arlington National Cemetery. Headed “HOLD FOR RELEASE”, the bulletin chronicles the funeral procession from St. Matthew’s Cathedral to Arlington, the 21-gun salute, rifle volleys, the sounding of Taps, the flyover of fifty fighter aircraft representing the fifty states, and the presentation of the folded American flag to Jacqueline Kennedy. The dispatch also records the presence of world leaders, President Lyndon B. Johnson, Caroline and John F. Kennedy Jr., and poignantly concludes with Mrs. Kennedy receiving the flag before departing the cemetery. Dated in the lower margin “11/25—EG 22 PFS,” the document represents an original newsroom transmission produced as events unfolded.

Unlike newspaper accounts prepared after the fact, original wire-service teletypes preserve history in real time, reflecting the language, pacing, and urgency with which major events were reported to editors and newsrooms.
