Original Massachusetts Democratic Party election ticket (ballot broadside), printed for the candidacy of John Quincy Adams of Quincy for Governor, together with a full slate of Democratic candidates for state and county offices. Printed on a narrow paper stock measuring approximately 4.75 x 10.25 inches, the ticket features a striking patriotic eagle and shield vignette at the top above the list of candidates.

The ballot includes John Quincy Adams for Governor, Samuel O. Lamb for Lieutenant Governor, Luther Stevenson Jr. for Secretary of State, Phinehas Allen for Auditor, Levi Heywood for Treasurer and Receiver General, William W. Warren for Attorney General, and numerous Essex County and district candidates including John K. Tarbox of Lawrence for Senator and Joseph S. Howe, Patrick Murphy, and Horace C. Bacon for Representatives to the General Court.

Political tickets of this nature were distributed directly to voters prior to the widespread adoption of the secret ballot and represent an important and increasingly scarce form of nineteenth-century American political ephemera. John Quincy Adams (1833–1894), often known as “John Quincy Adams II,” was the grandson of President John Quincy Adams and great-grandson of President John Adams. A prominent Massachusetts attorney and Democratic politician, Adams served in the Massachusetts legislature and became one of the leading Democratic figures in the state during the late nineteenth century. Although he was unsuccessful in several gubernatorial campaigns, he remained an influential voice in Massachusetts politics and carried forward one of America’s most distinguished political family legacies.
