Details:
Meshech Weare autographed militia commission signed as President of the State of New Hampshire, appointing John Southmayd as First Lieutenant of the Muffsborough Company in the Fourteenth Regiment of Militia. Dated Exeter, March 24, 1785, the document is additionally signed by Joseph Pearson as Deputy Secretary and bears the embossed paper seal of the State of New Hampshire. A docketing endorsement on the lower left records Southmayd taking the oath of office on July 4, 1785 before Noah Hoit, Justice of the Peace. Measuring approximately 14.5 x 12.5 inches.
Good condition with expected age toning, intersecting fold lines from period storage, light scattered foxing, and minor handling wear. The embossed state seal remains intact beneath an old protective paper cover affixed at the left side. A few small ink and surface marks are present. There is a small archival repair along approximately a 3-inch portion of a fold line on the verso. Overall, the document remains well preserved with strong signatures.
