Details:
Jethro Sumner autographed manuscript legal document, dated April 1, 1784, signed in his capacity as sheriff of Warren County, North Carolina. The manuscript document, measuring 8.5 x 5.25", concerns a writ ordering the attachment of the goods and chattels of Thomas Bragg in connection with a legal action. Sumner signs prominently at the conclusion alongside court clerk Thomas Machen, with the verso bearing contemporary docketing and filing notations. Executed less than a year after the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, the document represents a scarce civil record signed by one of the Continental Army’s most distinguished generals.
Good condition, with scattered toning, folds, paper loss at the center affecting portions of the text, edge wear, and docketing on the verso.
Jethro Sumner (1733-1785) was a Continental Army brigadier general during the American Revolutionary War and one of North Carolina’s most respected military leaders. Following service in the French and Indian War, he commanded North Carolina troops throughout much of the Revolution, participating in campaigns across the southern theater, including the Battles of Stono Ferry, Eutaw Springs, and the Yorktown Campaign. In recognition of his distinguished service, the Continental Congress promoted him to brevet major general in 1783. After the war, Sumner returned to public service in North Carolina, where he served as sheriff of Warren County until his death.
