Details:
Jacob Warren Revolutionary War pay order, printed treasury certificate completed in manuscript, issued by the State of Connecticut Treasury Office, Hartford, dated June 1, 1782. The document acknowledges a debt owed by the State of Connecticut to Jacob Warren, identified as having served in the Connecticut Line of the Continental Army. The certificate represents a portion of the balance due for Warren’s military service and promises payment in gold or silver at a future date, with interest accruing pursuant to an act of the Connecticut General Assembly.
The document is signed by John Lawrence (1740-1810) as Treasurer of Connecticut. Lawrence served as State Treasurer from 1769 until 1789 and oversaw the financial administration of Connecticut throughout much of the Revolutionary War period. Treasury certificates such as this were issued to compensate soldiers and creditors at a time when cash shortages made immediate payment difficult, effectively serving as interest-bearing obligations of the state government.
Issued during the closing years of the American Revolution, the certificate reflects the ongoing effort by Connecticut to settle military accounts with members of the Continental Army who had served in the struggle for independence. Such treasury obligations provide tangible evidence of both military service and the financial burdens borne by the states during the war.
Very good condition. Folded with expected wear from circulation and handling including a contemporary cancellation punch at center.
John Lawrence was a prominent Connecticut merchant, public official, and long-serving State Treasurer.
