Morgan Lewis signed New York military commission appointing Cyrus M. Johnson as Captain of a company in the militia of Herkimer County, New York. Printed commission completed in manuscript, issued at Albany and dated June 12, 1805, signed by Governor Morgan Lewis as Governor, General and Commander in Chief of the New York Militia, with an additional signature of Secretary Erastus Root. The commission bears the impressed seal for military commissions and formally authorizes Johnson to command his company in accordance with the laws and discipline governing the New York militia. Approximately 17 x 13.5 inches.
Good to very good condition with expected age toning, intersecting fold lines, scattered foxing, and light handling wear. The impressed seal remains visible, and the signatures are bold and well preserved.
Morgan Lewis (1754-1844) served with distinction during the American Revolution as an aide-de-camp to General Horatio Gates, participating in the Saratoga Campaign and other major operations. After the war he pursued a distinguished political and judicial career, serving as Governor of New York from 1804 to 1807. During the War of 1812, Lewis returned to military service as a Major General in the United States Army, overseeing military operations in northern New York. He later served in the United States Congress and remained an influential figure in New York and national affairs.
