Details:
Unusual group of original White House materials removed during the extensive renovation of the Executive Mansion conducted under President Harry S. Truman in 1950. The lot consists of two original building fragments, including a piece of white marble measuring approximately 1.5” and a piece of schist measuring approximately 1.75”, together with a square-cut iron nail measuring approximately 2.25”, all removed during the renovation project.
Also included is the original Commission on Renovation of the Executive Mansion mailing box with its original wood wool packing material intact. The box retains its printed mailing label reading “Commission on Renovation of the Executive Mansion,” marked “Order No. 8050” and “Item No. 4,” and addressed to J. M. Bueker of Belleville, Illinois. Completing the lot is the original presentation plaque bearing the presidential seal and the inscription, “Original White House Material Removed in 1950.”
The Truman renovation, undertaken between 1948 and 1952, was one of the most comprehensive reconstruction projects in White House history. Although the exterior sandstone walls were retained, the deteriorated interior was almost entirely dismantled and rebuilt around a new structural steel framework. During the project, commemorative sets of original building materials such as these were distributed to interested individuals through the Commission on Renovation of the Executive Mansion.
Condition: Overall fine condition with expected age toning, light wear, and oxidation to the nail. The original mailing box displays scattered handling wear and soiling consistent with age, while the original packing material remains present. The marble fragment, schist fragment, and presentation plaque remain well preserved.
