Harry S. Truman (1884–1972) served as the 33rd President of the United States from 1945 to 1953, succeeding Franklin D. Roosevelt upon his death during World War II. His presidency encompassed some of the defining moments of the twentieth century, including the conclusion of World War II, the authorization of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the establishment of the Marshall Plan, the recognition of the State of Israel, the Berlin Airlift, and the early years of the Cold War. This thoughtful handwritten reflection reveals Truman’s deep appreciation for presidential history and the leaders he believed best exemplified the ideals of American leadership.
