Official 4-page congressional printing titled “Report of the Committee on So Much of the Message of the President, as Relates to a Revision of the Militia Laws, on a Letter from the Secretary of War, Transmitting a Statement of the Claims Exhibited by the State of Virginia, and Which Have Been Disallowed on a Settlement Made at the War Office, 17th November, 1812.” Printed in Washington by A. & G. Way in 1814 and ordered before the House of Representatives on February 22, 1814. The report concerns claims submitted by the Commonwealth of Virginia arising from militia service during the War of 1812 and transmitted by Secretary of War James Monroe.

The report examines more than $20,600 in claims submitted by Virginia for militia expenses, including pay and forage, advances to officers, provisions, whiskey, medical supplies, blankets, tents, axes, kettles, and compensation for various services connected with calling out and inspecting the militia. After reviewing the evidence, the committee determined that many of the expenses had either already been provided for by the United States, lacked sufficient documentation, or represented obligations traditionally borne by the state rather than the federal government. The report concludes with the committee’s resolution that the claims “ought not to be allowed,” providing an informative glimpse into congressional oversight of military expenditures during the War of 1812.
