Description
20x17 This early 19th-century needlework sampler features cross-stitched embroidery on a coarse linen support. The composition includes multiple rows of uppercase and lowercase alphabets, a numeric sequence from 1 to 24, and a row of vowels. Decorative motifs include geometric borders and a scrolling pink border. The bottom register bears the stitched inscription: A. E. Grosvenor. Aged 8. 1823. The work is executed in shades of pink, green, and blue thread. The sampler is housed in a dark-toned wood frame with chip-carved detailing and crossed corners in a folk-art style, accented by a gilded inner slip. The verso includes a wooden backing board secured with modern tape and a paper label with contemporary handwriting reading: 1823 Aged 8YRS.
