Description
12x14 A large utilitarian cooking vessel constructed from heavy-gauge copper. The piece features a cylindrical body with a single vertical lap seam and a hand-hammered, or planished, base. The upper rim is rolled over a internal strengthening wire for structural integrity. The vessel is fitted with two hand-forged wrought iron brackets, each secured to the copper body with two rivets. A thick wrought iron swing handle is attached to these brackets. Examination of the interior and exterior base reveals no visible maker marks, stamps, or signatures. This type of vessel is characteristic of 19th-century American and European rustic kitchenware, historically used for large-scale tasks such as preparing apple butter or processing laundry.
