Description
This set of 32 hand-carved pieces is designed in the Anglo-Indian Lotus pattern and dates from the mid-to-late 20th century. The collection consists of two opposing sides. One side is finished in a natural cream tone, while the other side features natural cream upper sections mounted on dark ebony-toned turned bases. These dark bases are decorated with incised white dot and floral patterns. The major pieces are constructed with openwork honeycomb carving on the stems. The kings are surmounted by cross finials, and the queens feature tapered pointed finials. Bishops are carved with traditional mitre tops, and knights display horse-head carvings. The rooks are shaped as cylindrical turrets with rounded tops, while the pawns are turned forms with spherical finials. The pieces are hand-carved from bone. The set is housed in a rectangular, hinged presentation case with a dark textured exterior and brass hardware. The interior is professionally fitted with individual recessed slots and lined with blue velvet and white satin.
