The Peabody Outside Hammer sporting rifles were made circa 1866 to 1875 with 26" - 28" barrels. This rifle appears to have been shortened to a 23" barrel. It features a dovetailed, hooded, blade style front sight and adjustable sporting style rear sight. The forend is fitted to the barrel with a barrel band and a screw on the bottom side. The action is a martini style loading system with hammer on the right side and the Left side reads "Peabody's Patent July 22, 1862/Man'f'd By Providence Tool Co. Prov, R.I.". The trigger guard acts as a lever to open the action for loading. The rear stock is drilled on the top of the grip for a rear peep sight and fitted with a metal butt plate. FAIR - Mechanics are good. Bore is shiny with visible rifling. rear stock has 2 inch crack near the butt plate and chipping on top at the butt plate. Receiver and butt plate has pitting.
