This rifle was made in mid 1878 according to the serial number by Springfield Armory and is chambered in .45-70 It is fitted with a short blade front sight and Buffington rear sight on a 31 1/2" round barrel. The breach door is marked "US Model 1884" and the lock plate is marked "US Springfield " with the Eagle crest. The walnut stock is marked above the trigger guard with "JSA 1898" inspection cartouche for J. S. Adams who held the responsibility of inspections after Samuel Porter, but never given the title of Master Armorer. The metal butt plate is marked "US" on the top. LOP: 13 1/2". CALIBER/GA: .45-70. FAIR - Mechanics are good with a shiny rifled bore. Most metal parts show oxidation and pitting. Cleaning rod is missing.
