Description
Two Soviet-era Russian lacquer boxes featuring hand-painted miniature scenes and characteristic red-lacquered interiors. The smaller square blue-ground box is from the village of Mstyora and depicts a scene from Alexander Pushkin's classic fairy tale, The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish, showing a fisherman catching the golden fish, framed by a gold scrollwork border. The underside of this box features gold handwritten Cyrillic inscriptions along with a circular gold factory stamp. The longer rectangular black-ground box features a lid painted with two white cranes flying over a stylized Russian village landscape with log cabins and pine trees against a dark red sky. A faint gold Cyrillic inscription is partially legible along the bottom edge of the lid scene.
