Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mesoamerican cultures, ca. 300 BCE to 1500 CE. A large conch shell with evidence of human modification, suggesting a ritualistic or ceremonial past. It features two precisely pierced holes and a cut-off spire end. While its shape might evoke the thought of a trumpet, the spire's modification does not create an opening into the chamber, suggesting its purpose was for something other than an instrument. Shells held significant ritual value across many ancient cultures, and the deliberate alterations on this specimen point to its special, non-utilitarian role.
