Description
This amazing charity or alms bowl was masterfully chased from solid silver in Colonial Latin America, probably in Peru, in the late 18th Century, and features incredible detail. The piece shows a complete crucifixion scene with Jesus on the cross and several figures and attributes from the gospels surrounding him. The whole on a round base, raised on three feet. This piece would have featured prominently in 18th Century Religious worship services as a collection bowl for coins to be passed around among the attendants. The little bells on the ends of the cross would have reminded the faithful of their tithe duty towards god and their community.Measures approx. 11 1/2" high x 7" in base diameter and weighs ca. 1,410 grams.Tested for a minimum of 900 (90%) silver.Very good antique condition with some patina and wear according to age, previously in private European collection.
