Four Studies of the Royal Navy Fleet
George Bryant Campion (British, 1796-1870)

Four jewel-like pencil drawings of Royal Navy sailing ships, drawn around 1830 by George Bryant Campion "” drawing master at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich "” and presented together in a single handsome frame. Each little ship portrait sits on an embossed card by Dobbs of London, the great Regency fancy stationer, whose raised scrollwork borders act like miniature picture frames around the graphite. Three are signed with the artist's initials, and one carries his own penciled title, "A British Ship on a foreign Station."

The quartet covers the fleet in miniature: a towering three-decker anchored in a distant harbor, a trim frigate at rest, a two-decker leaning under full sail with gulls wheeling overhead, and a great ship of the line shown broadside, every gunport picked out. Drawn in the quiet decades after Trafalgar, they're dignified portraits rather than battle scenes "” the golden age of sail, sketched by a man who taught officers to draw. The four cards are mounted on black within a grained and gilt frame, ready to hang.

One frame, four ships, endless charm: hang it in a study, a hallway, or a boy's room gone nautical; it holds its own among woolworks, ship models, and old maps, and it's a natural for a coastal house that prefers real antiques to reproduction anchors-and-rope decor.
