Description
This was purchased at the auction of Mangold Trading Post long time traders in Native American art. Per the Mangold catalog, "This blanket was fully examined by a Navajo Elder leader from Crownpoint Navajo Nation, New Mexico. He explained the design, wool carding, and twisting in the ancient way and the weaving done with the back-strap method on this blanket. The diamond pattern is offset and the patterns fits across the chiefs' back and wraps around the shoulders, the chest, and the heart of the Chief." Rare and unusual. Very well preserved.
The Navajo transitional period between 1880-1900 describes the perion when Navajo weavers were transitioning from weaving blankets to weaving rugs. The railroads came to the Southwest in 1881.
The back-strap method of weaving creates uneven edges. The short sides of the blanket are 57.5" and 57.75". The long sides are 81" and 82"
