Description
This wonderful hand-crafted Grenfell Mat depicting the Map of Newfoundland dates to the 1930s and was produced by the Grenfell Labrador Industries. Created using dyed silk and rayon hosiery carefully hooked onto burlap, these mats were made as part of the mission established by Dr. Wilfred Grenfell to provide employment and support to fishing families in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The design features the recognizable outline of Newfoundland rendered in warm earth tones, accompanied by charming details including a departing sailing ship, a whale, compass rose, and coastal settlements. Professionally framed with a modern black frame and gray matting, this piece beautifully blends Canadian folk art, maritime history, and textile craftsmanship.
Grenfell mats are highly collectible and represent an important chapter in the cultural heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Very good vintage condition. The hooked textile retains strong colors and displays well. It has been professionally framed and is ready to hang.
