Edward H. Bohlin was born in Sweden in 1895 as Emil Helge Bohlin. (He would later change his name to Edward H. Bohlin when he immigrates to the United States). As a young man and a free spirit, he worked on a boat. In 1910 he sailed to the U.S. and found work as a cowhand in Montana. Talented, artistic and entrepreneurial, he opened his own leather shop in Cody where he refined his skills in leather and silverwork. Bohlin gained fame in Hollywood, crafting over 12,000 saddles and numerous silver outfits, including for the Tournament of Roses Parade. Many Western film movie stars wore his creations, earning him the title "Silver Saddle-Maker of the Stars.". His work in copper and leather launched his career as a saddle maker to the celebrities of Hollywood, where Bohlin eventually settled.
Bohlin made the harnesses for the wagons in the silent films, The Ten Commandments (1923) and Ben-Hur (1925). Though passing in 1980, Edward Bohlin's craftsmanship continues in the products made from his original designs. The Bohlin Company celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020 in Dallas Texas, where the company currently headquarters.
