Im Jahr 1929, vier Jahre nach der Markteinführung der Leica, wurde eine besondere Schmuckausführung vorgestellt. Leica-Erfinder Oskar Barnack hatte gerade seinen 50. Geburtstag gefeiert, als eine matt vergoldete Variante der Leica, mit Gehäusebezug aus farbigem Eidechsenleder im Leitz Katalog erschien. Der Ladenpreis lag beim Doppelten der Normalausführung und so entstanden in der Zeit bis 1933 insgesamt weniger als 100 Exemplare der „Luxus“ Leica. Aufgrund ihrer Einzigartigkeit übt die vergoldete Leica Luxus seit jeher eine ganz besondere Faszination auf Sammler aus. Sie zählt zu den großen Raritäten, von denen heute nur noch wenige originale Exemplare vorhanden sind.

Bei der Vorstellung der Leica Luxus handelte es sich zunächst um das Modell IA mit fest eingebautem Objektiv. Nach Erscheinen der Leica IC „0“ mit standardisierter Auswechselfassung wurden im Jahr 1931 lediglich zwei Exemplare der Leica IC Luxus überhaupt gefertigt (Seriennummern 68601 und 68834), wovon wir eines in unserer Auktion präsentieren. Die Kamera wurde am 21. Oktober 1931 als "Lessalux br. (braun)" an Lutz Ferrando, den seinerzeitigen Leitz Importeur in Brasilien, ausgeliefert und von Rolf Fricke in Rio de Janeiro in den 1970er Jahren erworben. (Rolf Fricke stammte selbst aus Rio.)

In 1929, four years after the Leica was launched, a special luxury edition was unveiled. Leica’s inventor, Oskar Barnack, had just celebrated his 50th birthday when a matt gold-plated version of the Leica, with a body cover of coloured lizard skin, appeared in the Leitz catalogue. The retail price was double that of the standard model, and so fewer than 100 examples of the „Luxus“ Leica were produced in the period up to 1933. Due to its uniqueness, the gold-plated Leica Luxus has always held a special fascination for collectors. It ranks among the great rarities, of which only a few original examples remain today.

When the Leica Luxus was first introduced, it was the model A with a fixed lens. Following the release of the Leica model C “0” with a standardised interchangeable mount, only two examples of the Leica model C Luxus were ever produced in 1931 (serial numbers 68601 and 68834), one of which we are presenting in our auction. The camera was delivered on October 21st 1931 as “Lessalux br. (brown)” to Lutz Ferrando, the Leitz importer in Brazil at the time, and was acquired by Rolf Fricke in Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s. (Rolf Fricke himself was a native of Rio.)
