Versuchsmuster zur späteren Leica M4. Handgefertigte Deckkappe mit sichtbaren Lötnähten unter der Verchromung, vorne noch heruntergezogen bis seitlich an den Bajonettring (wie bei M2). Bei den Bedienelementen (Vorlaufwerkhebel, Bildfeldwählhebel, Rückspulkurbel) handelt es sich um Designstudien, deren Formensprache noch deutlich von den späteren Serienversionen abweicht.
Mit Leitz Summaron 1:2.8/35 mm Prototyp NR. 0000238. Schneckengang und Unendlich-Verriegelung noch wie bei Summaron 1:3.5, Tiefenschärfeskala aber bereits mit 2.8 graviert. Starke Beschlagsbildung auf einer Innenfläche. Es sind uns lediglich zwei Exemplare derartiger Kameras bekannt.

Experimental unit to the later Leica M4. Handcrafted topplate with visible solder joints beneath the chrome plating, at the front it extends down to the side of the bayonet ring (as on the M2). The controls (advance lever, field-selector lever, rewind crank) are design studies whose styling still differs significantly from the later production versions.
Fitted with a Leitz Summaron 35 mm f/2.8 prototype NR. 0000238. The helicoid and infinity lock are still as on the Summaron f/3.5, but the depth-of-field scale is already engraved with 2.8. Substantial haze on one inner surface. We are aware of only two examples of such cameras.
