Qiu Ying (courtesy name Shifu; art name Shizhou) was a native of Taicang, Jiangsu. He excelled at figure painting?particularly depictions of elegant ladies?and was adept at coloring, ink wash, and *baimiao* (fine-line ink drawing). He employed diverse brushwork techniques to render various subjects, ranging from fluid, graceful curves to vigorous, striking lines; his occasional forays into bird-and-flower painting were also vibrant and exquisitely composed. He is recognized as one of the "Four Masters of the Ming Dynasty.
