Description
6 inches. This is a beehive or shoulder-style stoneware advertising jug, identified by the stenciled mark on the body for the wholesale distributor W.A. Baird and Co. The jug features a traditional two-tone glaze application, with a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze covering the neck and shoulder, and a cream Bristol-style glaze on the lower cylindrical body. A wire bail handle with a turned, black-painted wooden grip is attached to the vessel via two molded ears on the shoulder. The front of the jug bears a crisp black stenciled inscription that reads W. A. BAIRD and CO. The unglazed base shows characteristic concentric wire-cut marks from the potter's wheel. This style of jug was typically produced in the late 19th to early 20th century for the storage and transport of liquids such as whiskey or vinegar. Dimensions: Not provided.
