Within traditional Gurage homesteads, posts of this type were planted side by side to screen private sleeping quarters. Their textured surfaces were believed to provide a protective function. The surface displays a rich, dark patina from age and use.A similar example resides in the permanent collection of the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
