Description
Featured is a rare, double-sided oil painting on unstretched canvas titled Male Against Green Background by listed artist Robert Whitmore (American; 1890-1979), dated early-mid 20th century. The piece depicts the gestural portrait of a young man rendered against an ambiguous teal background. To the verso, the painting of a male nude posing during motion in a fencing position. The work is unsigned and marked with artist's estate stamp to the verso. This composition is presented unframed, mounted on foam board. This would be fabulous framed between panes of glass to use as in an area where it could be viewed on each side.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors.
