Description
Portrait painting "Oedipus and the Sphinx" oil painting on wood, signed, dated 1950
This painting depicts the portrait of Oedipus, and we can see the paw of the Sphinx on his left shoulder. According to Greek mythology, Oedipus is the only one to solve the riddle of the Sphinx. The goal was to determine "which animal has only one voice, and which, starting as a quadruped, successively becomes a biped and a triped one." Man was Oedipus's correct answer.
This academic portrait respects the style of its 1950s period. The influence of Cubism is palpable. The facial contours are stylized, reduced to pure lines and controlled curves. Bright, contrasting colors, applied in flat tints, are used.
