Large-Scale Late 19th-Early 20th Century European Historicist Portrait Painting

Description

Very large late 19th to early 20th century European oil portrait painted in the Renaissance revival (historicist) style. Statement piece. The composition depicts a richly dressed gentleman wearing a black cap and gold chain, set against a dark ground in the manner of Italian Renaissance civic portraiture.
Executed with a restrained palette and strong silhouette, the work emphasizes presence and costume rather than strict realism, reflecting academic European traditions popular at the turn of the century. Unsigned.
Presented in a gilt wood frame. With its generous scale (50" x 38"), the painting has a commanding decorative presence and works beautifully as a statement piece in traditional, English country, or collected interiors. Painting is approximately 44" X 33" unframed.

Origin is most likely Italy or Germany.
