An important mid-19th century map of the Australian colonies, covering South Australia, New South Wales, Van Diemen’s Land, and the area of present-day Victoria, which is not yet shown as a separate colony. Western Australia is inset at lower left, with additional inset plans of Adelaide and Sydney providing detailed views of the principal settlements. The map is dedicated to Major Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell, Surveyor General of New South Wales, and reflects the rapid expansion of settlement during the 1840s, with towns, rivers, coastlines, and overland routes marked. A significant example of Wyld’s colonial mapping, produced at a formative moment in the development of Australia under British rule. by Wyld, James. Published 1843 [dated].
