Description
Sketch Map of Southern Formosa to accompany the Paper by J. Thomson Esq'. Original lithographed sketch map prepared to accompany a paper by photographer and explorer John Thomson, issued under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society. The map documents Thomson’s journey in southern Formosa (Taiwan) during his travels in East Asia, undertaken in 1871, when he visited the island with the missionary James Laidlaw Maxwell, landing first at Takau (Kaohsiung) in early April. From there they travelled to the capital, Taiwanfu (now Tainan), before continuing inland to the aboriginal villages of the western plains, then little known to Europeans. The map reflects the exploratory and observational nature of the journey, recording routes, settlements, and indigenous regions rather than a formal survey, and stands as an early cartographic witness to Western travel in southern Taiwan. . Royal Geographical Society / John Thomson. Published 1873. Antique Royal Geographical Society map with related text pages. Size 27 x 21 cm | 10.5 x 8.5 inches. Condition: Good; suitable for framing.
