Description
Antique American Victorian-Empire Mahogany Parlour Table, Circa 1840s
A handsomely proportioned and richly detailed example of American Victorian-Empire period parlour furniture, this solid mahogany centre table combines the bold decorative vocabulary of the late Empire style with the domestic warmth and practicality that made the parlour table an indispensable fixture of the mid-19th century American home. The shapely top, generous in its 33½ by 22 inch proportions, provides ample surface for a lamp, books, or decorative objects, while the boldly turned vase form central pedestal rises with confident authority from a platform base adorned with crisp gadrooned mouldings and substantial Empire bracket feet "” a composition of considerable visual weight and decorative presence.
The solid mahogany top displays the warm, rich tones characteristic of the finest American Victorian-Empire work, and the overall form retains the architectural boldness that defines the style at its most satisfying. The table has been refinished at an earlier date and presents with honest wear consistent with its nearly 180 years of parlour service. Some veneer loss to the base and feet and a small area of surface discolouration to the top from an old marker contact are condition considerations honestly noted, and both are entirely manageable for a buyer comfortable with the piece's age and character.
