Fire Dreaming (2005) is a large-scale, radiant painting by Jean Hudson Nampijinpa, a senior Warlpiri artist from Central Australia.
In this work, Nampijinpa explores the Warlu Jukurrpa (Fire Dreaming) — an ancient story of fire as a living ancestral presence that sweeps across Country bringing destruction, renewal, and spiritual cleansing.
Painted in acrylic on premium Belgian linen, this surface becomes a living field of energy — translating ceremonial rhythm into modern visual abstraction.
The artist layers ochres, cadmium yellows, ultramarine blues, soft whites, and charcoal greys, producing a glowing interplay of heat and shadow.

About the Artist
Jean Hudson Nampijinpa (b. c.1956, Yuelamu / Mt Allan, Northern Territory) is a highly respected Warlpiri artist whose practice spans over four decades.
Raised within traditional law and ceremony, she was among the first women from Mt Allan to paint professionally, beginning in 1979.
Her Dreamings — Warlu (Fire), Ngapa (Water), and Kanmarra (Bush Onion) — are inherited through family lineage, connecting her work directly to sacred Country and ancestral narratives.
Jean’s art bridges ancient ceremonial iconography and modern abstraction, translating the rhythm of song, dance, and energy into colour and form.
Her work has been represented by Honey Ant Gallery, Kate Owen Gallery, and Kooroora Art Gallery, and exhibited internationally across Europe, the United States, and Asia.
In 2023–2025, Fire Dreaming was featured in the Lord Hill Museum exhibition “The Living Energy of Country”, curated by Adam Partridge — reaffirming her standing as one of the leading Warlpiri painters of her generation.
