About the Sitter – Lady Lucy Montagu, Countess of Guilford (1709–1734):

Lady Lucy Montagu was the daughter of George Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax, and became Countess of Guilford through her marriage to Francis North, who would later become the 1st Earl of Guilford. Known after marriage as Lady Lucy North, she was mother to Frederick North, Lord North, who famously served as Prime Minister to King George III during the American Revolutionary War.

Tragically, Lucy passed away in 1734 following the birth of her second child. Despite her short life, her legacy lived on through her son and her important place in British aristocracy. Her image was also captured in grander portraits by Sir Godfrey Kneller and Enoch Seeman, confirming her prominent role in the visual culture of Georgian Britain.

Attributed Circle of John Vanderbank (1694–1739):

John Vanderbank was a prominent English portraitist of the early 18th century. Trained under Jonathan Richardson and Sir Godfrey Kneller, he developed a distinct style known for its confident, painterly handling and psychological depth. Vanderbank’s portraits are characterized by their lively expressions and rich, often theatrical clothing detail—qualities clearly reflected in this piece.

George Vertue once wrote that Vanderbank could have rivalled any painter of his time, had his personal extravagances not interfered with his professional career. Despite this, Vanderbank left a significant legacy and painted many members of the English court and nobility.
